Policymakers in many countries are developing plans and funding research in artificial intelligence (AI). Global growth is slowing, and not surprisingly, many policymakers hope that AI will provide a magic solution. The EU, Brazil, and other Western countries have adopted regulations that grant users greater control over their data and require that firms using AI be transparent about how they use it. Will the U.S. follow suit?
General John Allen and Dr. Darrell West, authors of the recently published book Turning Point: Policymaking in the Era of Artificial Intelligence, which discusses both the opportunities and risks posed by artificial intelligence, will speak on this complex topic.
John R. Allen is president of the Brookings Institution. He is a retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star general and former commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan. He is co-author of Hyperwar: Conflict and Competition in the AI Century.
Darrell M. West is vice president and director of Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and holds the Douglas Dillon Chair. He is the director of the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings and is editor-in-chief of its TechTank blog. He is the author of The Future of Work: Robots, AI, and Automation (Brookings), among other books.
