In the geopolitical competition to map out the new Silk Road, Azerbaijan is a central player. As a key oil producer and home to vital oil and gas pipelines, it is a regional hub for economic activity. A secular, Muslim-majority nation, it also plays an important strategic role in opposition to extremist regimes and threats in the region. Ambassador Suleymanov will discuss the choices his country faces as it develops further.
Suleymanov has been Ambassador to the U.S. since 2011. Previously, he served in the Foreign Relations Department of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration and as Consul General to Los Angeles. Before joining diplomatic service, Suleymanov worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Azerbaijan and at the Open Media Research Institute in Prague. His degrees include a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is fluent in Azerbaijani, English, Russian, Turkish and Czech.
