This August, we are hosting five delegations as part of Citizen Diplomacy Programs at WorldBoston. Check below to see where the visitors are from and what the objectives of their visit are.

Combating Illegal Fishing off the Coasts and in Lakes of Africa

A Regional Project for Africa and Algeria

  • Review best practices for law enforcement to deter foreign fishing vessels from engaging in illicit activity.
  • Observe best practices in sustainable fisheries management and product traceability (from extraction to commercialization), and address the key role of maritime domain awareness (MDA) and interagency coordination.
  • Explore state, local, and federal strategies for addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
  • Encourage collaboration between government agencies, environment and policy NGOs, think tanks, fisheries-related industry representatives, and other relevant U.S. stakeholders to deter IUU fishing in exclusive economic zones (EEZ).
  • Facilitate conversation and collaboration on the successful creation and implementation of enforcement frameworks, agendas, roadmaps, and/or joint programs, particularly as they relate to overlapping and/or disputed territorial claims.

Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development

A Project for China

  • Highlight economic, political, and social factors that influence and encourage small business development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the U.S.
  • Demonstrate the impact of U.S. small businesses on local, regional, national, and global economies.
  • Examine trends in small business concepts, financing, management, operations, and marketing.

Women in Politics and Civil Society

A Multi-Regional Project

  • Examine the U.S. political system and the participation of women leaders at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Explore programs and initiatives that encourage young women to get involved in civic activities, including running for elected office.
  • Introduce the role that women’s organizations take in shaping political dialogue and gain an understanding of effective interaction and support among women across various sectors.
  • Highlight legislation and programs that promote equal pay and fair treatment for women in both civic and work spaces.
  • Introduce initiatives and legislation that address women’s needs in the social arena, including health care, employment, education, and childcare.
  • Demonstrate women’s political and civic interest and contributions to broader policy issues, such as legislation that affects foreign, military, and economic policy.

Emergency Preparedness Planning for Senior Municipal Staff

A Project for Japan

  • Showcase America’s leadership in safety and security by exchanging best practices in emergency preparedness at the municipal level.
  • Explore examples of building strong community leadership to prepare for natural and man-made disasters.
  • Discuss best practices on how to include disabled and elderly individuals with limited mobility into emergency planning.
