Hybrid Event at the Boston Public Library, Rabb Hall
Despite its large size, Indonesia remains virtually invisible to most Americans. But as one of the world’s largest democracies, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, and as an economic driver of ASEAN, why does it fly below the radar? What are current issues in U.S.-Indonesian relations, and what role can the country play in Asia?
Join us for a timely discussion on this topic with former Ambassador to Indonesia Robert Blake Jr. This program will feature an expert discussion, live audience Q&A, and time for networking with other globally-oriented participants in the Newsfeed Café.

Highlight
While most New Englanders are doing their best to escape the heat, WorldBoston’s Citizen Diplomacy team had a busy month bringing international delegations outside and into our community. In July, WorldBoston welcomed nine delegations through the U.S. Department of State-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
Celeste Ribeiro Hewitt from The Harborkeepersgreeting a delegation from Southeast Asia just before the start of a beach cleanup volunteer activity in East Boston
Peter Forman, President & CEO of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, greeting a delegation for a Dinner Diplomacy get together near his home in Plymouth.
We’re also happy to report that the State Department and implementing partner IREX recently selected WorldBoston to serve as a Cohort Ambassador for the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) for the sixth time!
In this role, WorldBoston will place entrepreneurs from Latin America with local businesses in Greater Boston for a four-week period. These businesses will assign the Fellows one or two projects that support their business objectives. The fellowships aim to develop lasting business connections between Greater Boston and Latin America. Past hosts have included Extrasense, Boston Public Market, The Capital Network, Junior Achievement of New England, South Shore Chamber of Commerce, Wayfair, Branchfood, Organic Bath Co., Polkadog, New England Aquarium, Greentown Labs, and many more across our community!
If you are interested in learning more about the YLAI program, please contact Joshua Bruno, Director of Citizen Diplomacy Programs, at jbruno@worldboston.org.
This August, WorldBoston hosts seven in-person projects through the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
A Regional Project for the Near East and North Africa
A Single Country Project for Cyprus
A Single Country Project for Kyrgyzstan
A Sub-Regional Project for USASEAN
A Single Country Project for Pakistan
A Project for the Palestinian Territories
A Single Country Project for Indonesia
We welcome your thoughts and ideas for in-person visitors programming. If you have suggestions, please contact Vice President for Citizen Diplomacy, Sarah Sibley.
This month, we will host a delegation of visitors from across the Pacific for a the Secure and Sustainable Infrastructure Program, with a focus on sustainable ports, similar to a group we hosted in July. The group will meet with local counterparts from the Port of New Bedford and MassPort, among others. A welcoming meal with local hosts to learn more about everyday life in New England will also be a feature of this visit.
We also have a couple special programs in September, so please keep an eye out for ways to get involved in next month’s newsletter.

The International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program and WorldBoston’s main citizen diplomacy partner. Launched in 1940, the IVLP is a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. These visits reflect the International Visitors’ professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.
The U.S. Department of State’s bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administers the IVLP. In doing so, the bureau enters cooperative agreements with National Program Agencies, a group of private, not-for-profit organizations based in Washington, D.C., that design and implement national IVLP itineraries. In addition to the National Program Agencies, the IVLP relies on the commitment and skills of local community organizations across the U.S., known as Community Based Members (CBMs). Under the professional association of Global Ties U.S., local CBM members develop professional programs, arrange cultural activities, and provide home hospitality for international visitors.
WorldBoston is part of the Global Ties Network of more than 90 CBMs in 45 states.
WorldBoston is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America,
a network of more than 90 independent Councils in more than 40 states.
