April at WorldBoston

April at WorldBoston

Dear Friends,

Below, you’ll see some notes about the recent visit of Amy Storrow, Director of the Office of International Visitors at the State Department. One of Amy’s observations particularly resonated with all of us at WorldBoston: The International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP), she said, is the kind of program that everyone thinks is for them. And it is: from the U.S. diplomats in the field who connect with key leaders in all kinds of professions to create the delegations, to the State Department which supports the overall foreign policy goals of the United States, to our national partners who create visitors’ multi-city schedules to ensure various programming goals are met, and perhaps most importantly for us, to our WorldBoston community.

Here at home, WorldBoston carefully fosters an immense network of professionals who are excited to exchange best practices with visiting peers, hospitable individuals who occasionally enjoy hosting meals, and time-tested logistical resources like hotels and transportation providers who reliably deliver the experiences that can make — or break the whole visit. We note the value, too: Every dollar the State Department spends on the IVLP generates $11 in our local community.

Contributions by everyone to make the IVLP great means something for everyone. Sounds like a win-win.

We hope to see you soon,

Help WorldBoston bring the world to you!

As a non-profit organization, WorldBoston relies on community support to deliver our mission of fostering engagement in international affairs and cooperation between people of all nations.

Citizen Diplomacy

Highlight

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Amy Storrow, Foreign Service Officer and Director of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) at the Office of International Visitors (OIV) in the Department of State. Director Storrow has had decades of experience with the IVLP, the flagship soft power professional exchange program of the U.S. Department of State. We were delighted to welcome her back to Boston where she has family ties and engage her with the community that helps make all of our international exchange magic happen.

During her visit, Director Storrow met with the WorldBoston Board, the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment (MOITI), the leadership of Boston University's Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, and even joined our IVLP delegation from Kosovo to meet with the Boston Main Streets Foundation, the Boston Mayor’s Office, and Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune!

Last year, WorldBoston was among the top three organizations in hosting numbers of IVLP visitors – out of about 80 other organizations across the nation. We are grateful to Director Storrow and OIV for their partnership and for supporting our active citizen diplomacy work across Eastern Massachusetts!

The International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program and WorldBoston's main citizen diplomacy partner. Launched in 1940, the IVLP is a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. These visits reflect the International Visitors' professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.
The U.S. Department of State's bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administers the IVLP. In doing so, the bureau enters cooperative agreements with National Program Agencies, a group of private, not-for-profit organizations based in Washington, D.C., that design and implement national IVLP itineraries. In addition to the National Program Agencies, the IVLP relies on the commitment and skills of local community organizations across the U.S., known as Community Based Members (CBMs). Under the professional association of Global Ties U.S., local CBM members develop professional programs, arrange cultural activities, and provide home hospitality for international visitors.
WorldBoston is part of the Global Ties Network of more than 90 CBMs in 45 states.
WorldBoston is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America,
a network of more than 90 independent Councils in more than 40 states.
