July at WorldBoston

July at WorldBoston

Dear Friends,

Yes, it's hot outside: The “Dog Days” are upon us. But for us this time of year means Donor Days. See a recent example of a Donor Days post here.

Have you noticed our social media feeds recently? This time of year, at least once a week as a gesture of gratitude, we hand over all our platforms to a sponsor to post…whatever they want! Sometimes business sponsors mention their companies, sometimes our individual sponsors feature their milestones. And — so inspiring — our sponsors also often choose to cite their support for WorldBoston. We love all these messages, as they help show the broad and deep support we count on in order to deliver our mission. So when you see the next “Donor Days” post, why not like it, or even re-post it? Spread the word!

And join in: Sponsorships for the 16th Annual Consuls Reception are open! We are so excited to welcome Kendalle Burlin O'Connell of MassBio as our keynote this year on October 21 for this can't-miss event in Boston's international calendar.

These sponsorships cover a broad range of giving, for both corporate and individual donors, deliver benefits to them, and provide essential support for WorldBoston's nonprofit, nonpartisan, and non-advocacy work all year round. Everyone knows that the federal funding environment is changing. So it's increasingly up to us, in our community, to help sustain international engagement. Let's be clear: The event offers excellent networking and visibility, but it also provides a big, essential part of our annual budget, especially now and going forward. I'd love to talk about sponsorship with you, so please reach out to me, myntema@worldboston.org.

Meanwhile, as you'll see below, summer at WorldBoston is busy with Citizen Diplomacy and preparing for the return of compelling Global Engagement programming in September. By the way, about that “community” notion: Thanks to our friends at the State House for the very warm welcome to a recent outstanding WorldBoston delegation from Europe on the floor of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. (See the clip, below.) Wow!

We hope to see you soon!

P.S. Wait, you're not following WorldBoston?! That's easily fixed, follow us on LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Bluesky, Instagram, and Facebook!

Updates From The Office

We're delighted to welcome Eleanor Deverell and Emma Scapicchio as our new Northeastern Co-Ops.

Emma is currently a fifth-year student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in International Affairs with a minor in French at Northeastern University. Emma grew up in the Boston area and calls this city her home, but has also spent a year abroad in London during the 2021-2022 academic year. Emma previously interned at the Massachusetts State House for the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources under Representative Dan Cahill, and later served as an intern for the Governor's Council under Governor Maura Healey's administration. Most recently, Emma worked at AIRINC as an International Housing Research Analyst, where she connected with real estate agents across the U.S. and Europe.

Emma is passionate about government and public affairs, and is eager to apply her experience and enthusiasm to this role at WorldBoston.

Eleanor is a third-year student at Northeastern University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. She is passionate about global engagement and cross-cultural understanding and is excited to be working with, and learning from, the WorldBoston team.

Eleanor began her academic journey studying abroad in London, where she took the opportunity to solo travel across Europe in between her classes. She has also taken part in several work exchange programs around the world, allowing her to immerse in new cultures, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to local communities.

WorldBoston bids a fond farewell to Isabella Stevens and Madeline Marsh, who joined the WorldBoston team in January as Program Associates as part of Northeastern University's Cooperative Education Program, and who worked closely on our Global Engagement and Citizen Diplomacy programs during their six months with us. Citizen Diplomacy

Highlight

In June, our International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) group from Europe on “Foreign Policy, Economy and China” received a warm welcome from Speaker of the House Ron Mariano and members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

The group also received a gracious and enthusiastic shout out from Speaker Pro Tempore Kate Hogan in the chamber of the Massachusetts House of Representatives! (Skip ahead to 14:42 to see the WorldBoston shoutout) Prior to the delegation's reception in the House Chamber, the delegation met with the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.

The committee is co-chaired by State Senator Barry Finegold and House Representative Carole Fiola. The group was also joined by Vice Chair Jessica Ann Giannino, Chair Kathy LaNatra, and Chair Tricia Farley-Bouvier.

Thank you to our friends at the State House, including many who hosted and attended our recent legislative briefing, for welcoming our visitors and always providing an enriching discussion.

Custom Visitor Programs

WorldBoston, in coordination with FHI 360, hosted a group of 9 visitors — all international English language educators, program administrators and professionals from K-12 and higher education settings — on a special project sponsored by the State Department on “Innovations and Best Practices for AI-Enhanced Language Learning in the English Language Classroom.” Participants came to Boston to learn about AI technologies relevant to language education and other emerging technology tools, including their application and potential challenges, enabling them to integrate these technologies into their teaching practice in their home countries.

WorldBoston oriented the group at The Boston Foundation to introduce the mission of WorldBoston and situate our organization in the context of Greater Boston and New England. Our presentation highlighted the city’s and region’s cultural significance, its position as a hub of innovation, and gave participants an overview of the program itinerary.

During their stay, the group met with individuals at Boston University, the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Education, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), and the International Institute of New England (IINE). Visitors especially enjoyed a meeting with Boston Public Schools on their pioneering policies surrounding AI and K-12 education, which included a stunning tour of the brand-new Josiah Quincy Upper School in Chinatown.

Visitors also spent time getting to do cultural activities which included a guided Freedom Trail Walking Tour, a visit to the MFA, a networking stop at Venture Café at the Cambridge Innovation Center, a group lunch in Chinatown, and dinner diplomacy with WorldBoston members in Andover.

This program will feature an expert presentation, live audience Q&A, and time for networking and discussion with other globally-oriented participants.

The International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program and WorldBoston's main citizen diplomacy partner. Launched in 1940, the IVLP is a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. These visits reflect the International Visitors' professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.

The U.S. Department of State's bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administers the IVLP. In doing so, the bureau enters cooperative agreements with National Program Agencies, a group of private, not-for-profit organizations based in Washington, D.C., that design and implement national IVLP itineraries. In addition to the National Program Agencies, the IVLP relies on the commitment and skills of local community organizations across the U.S., known as Community Based Members (CBMs). Under the professional association of Global Ties U.S., local CBM members develop professional programs, arrange cultural activities, and provide home hospitality for international visitors.

WorldBoston is part of the Global Ties Network of more than 90 CBMs in 45 states.

WorldBoston is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America,

a network of more than 90 independent Councils in more than 40 states.
