September at WorldBoston

September at WorldBoston

Dear Friends,

As the harvest season begins, WorldBoston already reports a bumper crop of opportunities for international engagement.

We have must-do Global Engagement events this month and scheduled throughout the rest of the year.  September alone features the Middle East, climate change, and our signature Diplomacy Now program. We're so honored to welcome back Ambassador (ret.) Nicholas Burns to the Boston Public Library on the essential topic, “The U.S., China, and The Great Powers” (Note that this free event is booked out in-person, but you can still register for the Zoom.)

Citizen Diplomacy is equally abundant, including visitors from Indonesia, Latin America, and more, and spanning a world of topics from AI (of course), to maritime policy, entrepreneurship, and beyond.

This is also the season when we'll amplify our NextGen pilot programs, reaching out to educators in particular. Among other initiatives, we're excited to extend the benefits of our high-quality programs with curricula utilizing our vast store of event recordings.  We're also very proud to be able to invite a student and an educator to attend the high-level World Affairs Councils of America national conference in November in Washington.

And now is the time for you to chip in to WorldBoston's basket. The 16th Annual Consuls Reception on October 21st honors our diplomatic corps, highlights a central topic for our ecosystem, and showcases you, our community. As times change, we must increasingly count on you to ensure that, true to our heritage, our region remains a “Beacon of International Engagement.” Sponsorships begin at very accessible levels and provide year-round visibility and insider partner benefits. Note that sponsorships close on October 3rd for the Consuls Reception, so don't miss out. (Feel free to contact me with sponsorship questions, myntema@worldboston.org.) Individual registrations for attendance will go on sale soon.

We hope to see you soon.

Help WorldBoston bring the world to you!

As a non-profit organization, WorldBoston relies on community support to deliver our mission of fostering engagement in international affairs and cooperation between people of all nations.

Citizen Diplomacy

Highlight

On August 14th, we hosted “Speak Up! Networking and Languages with WorldBoston” a networking event held at The Foundry in Cambridge. This highly attended public event brought together a vibrant mix of our local community members and distinguished international guests. Over the course of the evening, attendees enjoyed lively conversations, an exciting raffle, and “Lingo Bingo.” Two IVLP delegations attended the event – a group from China focused on “Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development” and a multi-regional group from 24 different countries focused on “Women in Politics and Civil Society” – representing 25 different countries and numerous languages. The friendly interactions between visitors and community members served as a perfect example of how international exchanges strengthen and enrich our community.

Global Engagement

Join us for WorldBoston’s signature Diplomacy Now program, a high-level opportunity to consider American diplomacy in our current global context. This year’s program will focus on “The U.S., China, and the Great Powers.”

We are honored to welcome back Nicholas Burns (ret.) Ambassador to China, and the Roy and Barbara Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Ambassador Burns offers a unique perspective on this topic, as the most recent U.S. Ambassador to China and as a lifelong diplomat who served under six U.S. Presidents and nine Secretaries of State.

Ambassador Burns helped establish this now-annual signature WorldBoston program in 2018, and featured in it 2018-2021.

The International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program and WorldBoston's main citizen diplomacy partner. Launched in 1940, the IVLP is a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. These visits reflect the International Visitors' professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.

The U.S. Department of State's bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administers the IVLP. In doing so, the bureau enters cooperative agreements with National Program Agencies, a group of private, not-for-profit organizations based in Washington, D.C., that design and implement national IVLP itineraries. In addition to the National Program Agencies, the IVLP relies on the commitment and skills of local community organizations across the U.S., known as Community Based Members (CBMs). Under the professional association of Global Ties U.S., local CBM members develop professional programs, arrange cultural activities, and provide home hospitality for international visitors.

WorldBoston is part of the Global Ties Network of more than 90 CBMs in 45 states.

WorldBoston is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America,

a network of more than 90 independent Councils in more than 40 states.
