The end of the Imperial Republic and the Future of the Trans-Atlantic Alliance

Wednesday, June 4th

10:00 – 11:30 AM ET

The Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings will host Camille Grand, European Council on Foreign Relations – ECFR, who will break down scenarios and challenges for European security in light of a changing trans-Atlantic relationship which possibly marks the end of the “Imperial Republic,” as Raymond Aron branded the United States’ post-1945 foreign policy. Following the address, Mara Karlin, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution and a professor of practice at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and Peter Rough, senior fellow and director of the Center on Europe and Eurasia at the Hudson Institute, will join Grand for a discussion moderated by Constanze Stelzenmüller, director of the Center on the United States and Europe at Brookings. Suzanne Maloney, vice president and director of Foreign Policy at Brookings, and Agnès von der Mühll, the French deputy chief of mission to the United States, will provide welcome remarks.

Crisis and Continuity: South Korea Votes in the Shadow of Impeachment

Wednesday, June 4th

12:00 – 1:00 PM ET

Following President Yoon’s declaration of martial law in December 2024, Parliament swiftly moved to impeach him—a decision later upheld by the Constitutional Court. Now, the nation is bracing for a high-stakes presidential race on June 3rd. This political upheaval unfolds against a backdrop of economic strain. Korea’s economy contracted in the first quarter of 2025, exacerbated by newly imposed U.S. tariffs. As the country grapples with its future, key issues dominate the national conversation: how to manage tense trade relations with President Trump’s administration, recalibrate ties with China, and stabilize the faltering economy. Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung currently leads in the polls, but the race is far from decided. The outcome could reshape Korea’s domestic and international trajectory for years to come. Join the World Affairs Council of Atlanta for a free, public webinar in which Ambassador (ret.) Charles Shapiro will discuss the results and the implications for U.S.-Korea relations with leading Korea expert Sydney Seiler.

The Future of Deception in War: Lessons from Ukraine

Thursday, June 5th

2:00 – 3:00 PM ET

June 6 marks the eighty-first anniversary of D-Day, one of the most successful deception operations in history. On that day in 1944, the Allies used a range of means to conceal when, where, and how they would invade Nazi-occupied Europe. However, as Peter W. Singer and Mick Ryan argue in a new report, deception in warfare is being reshaped by a blend of old and new lessons, as well as the effect of technologies ranging from artificial intelligence to drones to 3D printing. Even more, the allies that once led the way are now falling behind their foes in a new kind of deception gap. Join New America’s Future Security program as it welcomes Mick Ryan and Peter W. Singer, co-authors of a new report on deception operations, for a discussion of the future of deception in war and lessons from Ukraine. Mick Ryan is a retired major general in the Australian Army and author of War Transformed. Peter W. Singer is a Strategist and Senior Fellow at New America, Professor of Practice at Arizona State University, and author of LikeWar. The conversation will be moderated by David Ignatius, foreign affairs columnist at The Washington Post.

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT MUTUAL AID PLATFORM

The Boston Network for International Development created a Mutual Aid platform to support individuals in Greater Boston / New England who have been directly impacted by the foreign aid pause and USAID shutdown. This peer-to-peer resource connects community members who need assistance with those who can offer help in areas such as career mentorship, job search support, networking, housing, and more.

How It Works:

If you need assistance, submit a request and your request will be shared (without personal contact details) on a public listing (see list of requests).

If you can offer assistance, submit an offer and your information will be listed publicly for those seeking help (see list of offers).

If you see a specific request you can help with, submit a response and your offer will be forwarded to the requestor.

This platform is a community-driven mutual aid network. BNID does not verify, vet, or endorse any requests, offers, or responses. All interactions are voluntary and at participants’ own risk.
