HIDDEN NO MORE: EMPOWERING WOMEN LEADERS IN STEM

A Multi-Regional Project

  • Review the evolution and advancement of women in scientific research and innovation in the United States
  • Explore policies of organizations and educational institutions that champion the interest of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
  • Gain insight into the critical need for women’s involvement in the design, engineering and implementation of scientific research, applications, solutions and technology, including hardware and closed- and open-source software
  • Provide opportunities for participants to network with professional counterparts at scientific academies, associations, universities, businesses and agencies across the United States
  • Examine public/private partnerships designed to accelerate student learning in STEM subjects, especially for girls from diverse backgrounds

PROMOTING CYBERSECURITY II

A Multi-Regional Project

  • Examine the U.S. government’s efforts to manage cybersecurity risk and assess threats to critical infrastructure
  • Discuss U.S. policy and efforts to secure an open, interoperable, secure, and reliable cyberspace, including U.S. interagency functions
  • Explore cyber education, research, and development efforts
  • Assess the efficacy of Internet security legislation and explore protections for privacy rights and civil liberties
  • Evaluate the role of the private sector in promoting cybersecurity, including public-private information sharing and data protection
  • Explore economic and national security impacts of malevolent cyber activity
  • Discuss strategies to collaborate and counter cyber threats

WOMEN AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: STARTUPS

A Multi-Regional Project

  • Examine examples of entrepreneurial efforts in the United States, particularly those initiated or managed by women
  • Explore the essential role of non-governmental and grassroots organizations in supporting and empowering the development of women-owned businesses
  • Explore the social, economic, and political factors that influence and encourage the development of private enterprise in the United States
  • Examine strategies for job creation
  • Discuss societal barriers facing entrepreneurs, especially women and other disadvantaged groups, and best practices in overcoming these restrictions
  • Explore various business models, support mechanisms, and innovations that bolster businesses such as micro-lending, multi-level marketing, use of the internet, mentoring programs, and others

YOUTH AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

A Regional Project for Africa and Haiti

  • Examine leadership strategies and communication skills used to manage political and social challenges while balancing divergent social demands and interests
  • Explore advocacy strategies that facilitate social empowerment and justice
  • Discuss how public-private partnerships foster political and civic engagement
  • Review political, social, and economic policy formulation and the various players who influence the decision-making processes; and Illustrate the value of community service and volunteerism in U.S. communities.

PROMOTING U.S HIGHER EDUCATION IN STEM VOCATIONS: PRE-COLLEGE SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAMS

A Project for Spain

  • Review best practices for preventing and comEstablish new alliances and collaboration with pre-college science education programs in the United States
  • Assist the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation with strengthening and deepening its strategic partnerships with U.S. higher education institutions in STEM fields
  • Explore how U.S. universities and other institutions are promoting STEM studies among high school students
  • Share experiences and learn firsthand from similar institutions in the United States: pre-college science programs, science education stakeholders; high schools with innovative science education approaches and interested in promoting international science experiences for their students
  • Promote the exchange of American and Spanish students and professionals interested or involved in science education programs, study abroad programs
  • Help the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation expand their International Network of Youth Science Programs by adding U.S. partner institutions for the first time

LGBTQI+ POLICIES AND IMPLEMENTATION IN THE UNITED STATES

A Project for Vietnam

  • Examine the background, status, and implementation of federal, state, and local laws guiding the promotion and protection of the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons, including state discrimination, adoption, and gender affirmation laws, and the U.S. historical experience to include shifts in public opinion recognizing same-sex marriage from one state in 2004 to all fifty states in 2015. This will help facilitate Vietnam’s approval of its draft Gender Affirmation Law
  • Improve understanding of jurisprudence on issues impacting LGBTQI+ persons and best practices and resources for legal actors
  • Illustrate the role of federal, state, and local governments, as well as non-governmental organizations, in supporting and protecting the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons through effective collaboration, policy implementation, and enforcement
  • Gain an understanding of the science and data-supported evidence behind historical and contemporary gender issues and transgender people, including case studies with a focus on discrimination, health, education, identities, and transition processes
  • Learn about public opinion regarding LGBTQI+ persons and policies that impact their human rights
