A Project for Peru

  • Enhance understanding of the underlying principles of ethical systems for accountability in government and business in the United States
  • Address international efforts to strengthen the integrity of governments and businesses
  • Examine the effect of transparency on trade, investment, and economic development
  • Explore the role of citizens, traditional and new media, academia, and civil society in fostering transparency and accountability in government

EDWARD R. MURROW PROGRAM FOR JOURNALISTS – NEW AND TRADITIONAL BROADCAST MEDIA

A Multi-Regional Project

  • Review the history and importance of press freedom in the United States
  • Examine the structure, practices and future of broadcast journalism in the United States
  • Illustrate how new technologies shape the way news is gathered, reported, distributed and consumed
  • Explore the crucial role of responsibility and accuracy in reporting in a democracy
  • Examine the efforts of fact checking groups
  • Examine how broadcast media influences and reflects American society
  • Demonstrate the influence of social media and digital technologies on how citizens use and share information
  • Explore the current and potential contributions of broadcasting to the formation of an informed citizenry within a diverse, democratic and decentralized society

U.S. FOREIGN POLICY DECISION MAKING

A Multi-Regional Project

  • Examine the process and key players in formulating, articulating and implementing foreign policy in the U.S. federal system
  • Review U.S. foreign policy priorities and trends in U.S. international relations
  • Explore the domestic political and economic forces that influence U.S. foreign policy decisions
  • Discuss how social media is transforming the practice and formation of foreign policy

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

A Regional Project for Africa

  • Observe the effectiveness of the business sector in creating jobs and alleviating poverty worldwide
  • Examine the legal and regulatory systems that allow entrepreneurs to flourish, and identify policies that may discourage such enterprises
  • Discuss societal barriers facing entrepreneurs, especially women and other disadvantaged groups, and best practices in overcoming these restrictions
  • Explore various business models, support mechanisms, and innovations such as micro-lending, multi-level marketing, the use of the internet, and others

RULE OF LAW AND THE U.S. JUDICIAL SYSTEM

A Regional Project for Africa

  • Examine the underlying principles of the U.S. judicial and legal systems and their basis in the Constitution and the rule of law
  • Deepen understanding of the federal and state judicial systems for both criminal and civil matters under the U.S. model of federalism
  • Demonstrate the workings of an independent judiciary and promote the advancement of fair, transparent, accessible, and independent judiciaries around the world
  • Study the interaction of the legal system between law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and courts
  • Explore measures to protect victims

ASEAN: MARITIME POLICY AND SECURITY FOR THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

A Sub-Regional Project for East Asia

  • Connect U.S. and ASEAN policy experts to exchange information on the PRC’s misuse of international law and brainstorm legal responses to counter unlawful PRC claims
  • Inform ASEAN policy makers and policy advisors about U.S. international maritime policy and specific considerations for U.S. policy in the SCS
  • Enhance ASEAN’s capacity to develop legal policies to defend and exercise authority over its own maritime claims in accordance with international law
  • Enhance mutual understanding about how military and law enforcement forces interpret and operationalize international law in their SCS activities
  • Expose participants to the U.S. security and defense policy-making process and perspectives on global issues
  • Observe and understand how U.S. maritime agencies collaborate to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA)

BEST PRACTICES IN FOREIGN INVESTMENT SCREENING

A Regional Project for Europe

  • Examine the U.S. system of investment screening, to include the roles and perspectives of stakeholders at the federal, state and local levels in the investment screening process
  • Investigate the importance of establishing a high-threshold, national security-focused screening system that can attract, rather than deter investment
  • Highlight the principles that guide the development of a robust investment screening mechanism and tools effective in enforcing it
  • Examine international economic cooperation in the context of the growth and integration of emerging markets into the world economy
  • Explore the variety of funding mechanisms available for national and local economic development with a focus on the nexus of business opportunities, development priorities, and national security considerations

EDWARD R. MURROW PROGRAM FOR JOURNALISTS – MEDIA RESPONSIBILITY IN AN AGE OF DISINFORMATION

An Inter-Regional Project for the Indo-Pacific and Central Asia

  • Introduce and provide broad exposure to the serious impact of the current threat posed by disinformation and deceptive news
  • Explore ways to verify reliable sources of information and counter misinformation
  • Discuss how social media and new technologies can be utilized to amplify messages, disseminate information and connect with a target audience
  • Consider ways to foster a discerning audience of media consumers
  • Focus on approaches to build trust between the media, government and citizens

EMPOWERING WOMEN MANAGERS IN MANUFACTURING

A Project for Japan

  • Address barriers faced by women in gaining the international experience necessary to reach higher levels of corporate leadership and responsibility.
  • Engage with women-owned businesses in the United States.
  • Explore how the automobile, tech, and manufacturing sectors support the advancement of women in business

STRENGTHENING MINORITY CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS

A Project for Kosovo

  • To examine the American federal, state, and local practices, roles, and responsibilities of institutions in advancing minority issues, with a special emphasis on minority integration in the American system
  • To expose participants to U.S. civil society organizations dealing with minority issues, with special emphasis on those dealing with minority rights, youth education and employment
  • To strengthen the capacities of local minority civil society organizations and improve their networking capacities with their communities and with local and state institutions

THE FIGHT FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

A Project for Japan

  • Explore advocacy tools for improving and preserving marriage equality in the United States
  • Examine strategies for supporting marriage equality in Japan
  • Learn about the history of marriage equality in the United States and related legal achievements

BEST PRACTICES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION

A Project for Uzbekistan

  • Enhance understanding of ethical systems and accountability in government and business in the United States, including oversight of public procurement and conflict of interests
  • Examine the statutory, judicial and regulatory frameworks for fighting corruption
  • Study the investigation and prosecution of fraud, abuse and corruption cases, including cases related to asset and income declaration
  • Introduce private and public activities intended to make governments more transparent
  • Observe public awareness programs about corruption and government ethics, including the role of the media, NGOs, and AI and IT to support analysis of data regarding corruption
